Prerequisites
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the drives and backplane, remove the drives from the system before removing the backplane.
CAUTION: Note the number of each drive and temporarily label them before you remove the drive so that you can reinstall them in the same location.
NOTE: The procedure to remove the backplane is similar for all backplane configurations.
Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions.
Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your system:
Power off the system and all attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If applicable, remove the system from the rack.

Remove the system cover.
Remove the backplane cover.
If installed, remove the air shroud.
Remove all the drives.
Remove the cooling fan cage assembly.
Disconnect the drive backplane cables from the connector on the system board.
Disconnect the drive backplane cables from the connector on the backplane.
Removing the drive backplane:
Press the blue release tabs to disengage the drive backplane from the hooks on the system.
Lift and pull the drive backplane out of the system.
NOTE: To avoid damaging the backplane, ensure that you move the control panel cables from the cable routing clips before removing the backplane.
Installing the drive backplane:
Use the guides on the system as guides to align the slots on the backplane.
Insert the backplane into the guides and lower the backplane until the blue release tabs clicks into place.
Route the cables properly through the cable guide and connect the cables to the connector on the system board.
Install the cooling fan cage assembly.
Install all the drives.
If removed, install the air shroud.
Install the drive backplane cover.
Connect the drive backplane cables to the connector on the system board.
Connect the drive backplane cables to the connector on the backplane.
Follow the procedure listed in After working inside your system:
Replace the system cover.
If applicable, install the system into the rack.
Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet, and then power on the system.
